The Farm

Grove is a typical Lakeland hill farm, running to some 160 acres of grass and woodland on the slopes of the Stock Valley. The pastures on the farm are home to our herd of pedigree Dun Galloway cattle. The animals live outside all year round and graze the plentiful supply of grass around the farm. In winter time they are fed hay when lying snow and frost can make grazing difficult.

In 2009 we entered into an agreement (the Entry Level Scheme) with the government body Natural England to manage the farm in specifically environmentally friendly ways. These include managing the grassland without any artificial fertilisers. We are currently applying to enter the Higher Level Scheme which is aimed at farmers who want to further their commitment to the environment. If our application is successful we intend to take steps to protect the alder woodlands on the valley slopes and also to renovate the old barn situated on the drive up to the farm.

Guests are invited to explore the farm – there are some lovely spots to take a picnic down by the river. The fells above the farm are easily accessible by a number of paths from your door, and provide for some magnificent scenic walks without the need to take the car. More information about the whereabouts of stock and a suggested walk is available in the reception area at the farm.

We now sell our home produced beef in a box; vacuum packed and frozen ready for guests to take home - please ask for details.
